“400 Years’ relations between Japan and the Netherlands” Visual Identity
Royal Netherlands Embassy

Category: Branding Date: 1997

The relationship between the Netherlands and Japan started when a wrecked Dutch boat ran aground off shore of Bungo Bay, now in Ohita prefecture, in 1600, and people of Bungo Village warmly took care of the crew.
The Logo Design works, a part of commemorative event for the 400th anniversary in the year 2000, in cooperation between Dutch and Japanese designers took place. The work was conducted between GK Graphics in Tokyo and Mr. Anne Steenstra / a designer of Grappa Design Inc. in Amsterdam through Internet communication.
The colors of both countries' national flag, red, white, blue, were used for the background of the Logotype. One of the fan shapes symbolizes Japan and another symbolizes the Netherlands by the shape of Dejima, the authorized but secluded living area built for Dutch trade representatives then.
