Tendo Onsen Hot Spring Turret
Tendo Onsen Association

Category: branding, environment Date: 2021

We transformed the new hot spring source at Tendo Onsen into a cultural landmark rooted in the memory and identity of the region. The Tendo Onsen Hot Spring Turret reinterprets the original rural landscape of the area—where wooden watchtowers once stood among rice fields during the Meiji era—and translates it into a contemporary architectural expression that reflects the character of a modern hot spring town.

In addition to its functional role in maintaining the hot spring source, the turret is accompanied by an information board that conveys the history of Tendo Onsen, benches crafted using locally developed molded plywood techniques, and materials such as tuff stone and cedar sourced from the region. Together, these elements embody the cultural narrative of Tendo and establish the site as a focal point for both residents and visitors. It is also designed as a wayfinding hub that connects the various scenic and cultural attractions dispersed throughout the hot spring district.

Around the turret, small rice paddies have been created as part of a framework for preserving local customs. Seasonal rituals such as rice planting and harvesting are held here, allowing traditional cultural practices to be passed on to future generations.
