Hida Furukawa town signage plan
Hida City

Category: Environment Date: 2017

Hida Furukawa is a small town in the mountains of northern Gifu Prefecture. The townscape, described by Ryotaro Shiba as having a "splendid elegance and classical style," has retained its atmosphere through generations.
In this project, we respected the "pride and will” the people of Furukawa have in their town, and tried to reflect them in the signage that would greet visitors. From the early stages of the project, we worked together with the local government staff and citizens to share an understanding of the role and meaning of design through actual cases, searching for the design that is best for this town.
Specifically, we sought a typeface and a fine-tuned character setting that would blend in with the landscape while welcoming and guiding visitors with a gentle "Hida dialect." At the same time, we developed arrows and pictograms with nuances appropriate to the townscape. The supporting structure was designed with attention to size, proportions and coloring that harmonize with the environment, measures against snow, and a structure that can be disassembled for festivals, all through repeated discussions with the citizens, experiments and verifications.
