Oita Prefecture

Category: Environment Date: 1995

The Toyonokuni Libraries are a multiple public facilities consisting of library, municipal government archive and philosophers' archive. A cubic space of the library's reading room was divided evenly by a hundred columns. An architect Arata Isozaki who planned the facilities named the library as "the room of a hundred columns." The room was designed as the "receptacle" capable for various future change such as in layout. The sign for the premises was planned based on the system and the mechanism provided the future change of information. The sign was positioned in the architectural space as the changeable fixture for lasting use in timeless public facilities. Also Mincho characters were used in typography for softened expression, not just in mechanical and functional perception.
