本書は見過ごされがちな存在であるガラスびんに、大きくスポットをあてている。現在あるどんなびんにも、その背後には技術の歴史があり、大量に供給し、商品を流通させてきた産業や経済の歴史、商品を受け入れてきた生活の歴史があります。「ガラスびんの世界」、「ガラスびんの生活史」、「ひろがるびんの世界」の3章構成になっています。
　表紙のデザインでは、さまざまなガラスびんの姿が時代を語り、素材のガラスが生活現場に息づく様を表現しました。
