Interactive Packaging – a future package utilizing ICT

Category: Design Study Date: 2015

This is one of the exhibits from GK Graphicsʼ 30th Anniversary Exhibition.
Current existing product packages have product and brand information printed on them, displaying a fixed message to the consumer. These messages are one-way and must wait for the consumer to buy it for the communication to be completed.
Today’s advanced information technology enables abundant interactive communication through mobile devices in daily life. Devices are becoming light and thin; paper-thin flexible displays and wireless sensors using RFID* technology are being implemented in various fields. It will be no surprise if these technologies replace printed contents in the near future.

For this Interactive Packaging prototype we chose an item everyone knows – the pouched pour-on curry – to explore the possibilities of communication design in product packaging, utilizing ICT that should come into practical use in the future. As the consumer takes the package from the shelf and touches, sways or tilts it, the contents on its surface changes interactively. Information on the product and brand will be conveyed as if in an interactive conversation though this exciting graphic experience.
